The London & Home Counties branch of the Society was one of the most active during the early days of the Society. A particular strength of the branch was its concern with the preservation of the heritage of paddle steamers. One of the core aims of the Society to this day is to preserve the heritage of paddle steamers and to educate the public about them.

The above photograph shows early members of the Society at a meeting held at Margate Town Hall in 1964 to promote the tradition of paddle steamers and to encourage people to cruise on the remaining ones at that time. Harold Collard Stone, an early member is standing on the extreme left.

The Society has collected a great deal of heritage material from famous paddle and pleasure steamers over the years and two of these items can be seen in this photograph. On the desk is a steward's bell from the Clacton Belle and on the wall is the house flag of the Medway Queen flown on her last public cruise in 1963. Both of these objects are now in the PSPS Collection.
